So that's what everyone is talking about.

On Thursday, Facebook rolled out its updated search function called Search FYI, which is designed to help users find and engage in news-related conversations outside of their own Facebook network. Search FYI allows you to search for a story and see not just posts from friends, but all public posts pertaining to the topic.

In an example provided by Facebook, a search for "water on Mars" returns results from NASA and CNN, as well as posts by the sample user's friends.

The updated search function expands on its "Trending Topics" section, making it easier for users to find and engage with big news-related posts, and Facebook obviously hopes it will inspire them to post and share more often themselves.

And as TechCrunch points out, the more searches conducted, the more info Facebook can sell to advertisers. Facebook's VP of Search told TechCrunch that the company is not monetizing Search FYI just yet, but definitely intends to in the future.
