Colbert Interviews YouTube Star PewDiePie and Learns to Curse in Swedish

Stephen Colbert's tenure on the Late Show has only just begun, but he's already made it apparent that he's courting a tech-savvy audience. To that end, one of his guests last night was someone whose celebrity is due entirely to the internet—YouTube's own PewDiePie.

PewDiePie's real name is Felix Kjellberg, and his YouTube channel has been both the most viewed and most subscribed for over a year, with over 39 million subscribers and 10 billion views.

Kjellberg's channel content falls into the category of "Let's Play," where viewers watch him play video games and listen to his stream of profane chatter. Lots of YouTubers make these kinds of videos, but something about Kjellberg's personality appeals to other young gamers.

For several years now, social media powerhouses like Kjellberg or any of the numerous interchangeable Vine stars have occupied a parallel world of celebrity that rarely crosses over. It will be interesting to see if and how the entertainment establishment evolves to fully welcome them into the fold.
