Artist Bafic’s Central London GIF Art

As part of a collaboration with EE, we gave digital artist Bafic a Huawei P9 and asked him to get busy with the camera function, which includes some pretty great editing software. He came up with the murky, edgy .gif action of you can see below.

Central London is my favourite place. I used to take the bus into Central and just walk around at night watching people do things, watching the LED video displays light up the streets. Everything that's right and everything that's wrong with the city and the world can be seen in Central - I love it, there's good energy: it's so far gone it's not trying to come back again - it just is what it is. I wanted to shoot that.

I'm really into photographing everyday life, and plugging it into the digital thing that is big part of our existence now. How can I do what artists have been doing for so long but augment it to reflect how we see things these days? Let's talk about life and let's talk about files - it's all zeros and ones and all I keep thinking about is how I can make something that stops you mid-scroll like, "Whoa, this is some dope work."

I think about surveillance a lot, it shows up in a lot of things I make because it's constantly on my mind. Whether it's me thinking about the grey boxes on street corners which are connected to a control room of some sort, or me walking around with a camera of some sort…..visually recording something with whatever device I have on my person at the time.
