Not as Popular but Just as Cute: 'Bacteria Selfies'

Disgusting bacteria photographed into something not quite as disgusting.

Bacteria is in the eye of the beholder.

Olivia Vankuiken, a studious high school senior from New Jersey, discovered the cringe-inducing microorganisms to be quite pretty. She collected bacteria from different parts of her body, cultivated them in a petri dish, and created a "physical representation" of herself.

Vankuiken found that the patterns of her microorganisms were as unique as she is. "Alone a fingerprint can not tell you anything about the appearance of a person, yet when put in context, they are the only truly unique exterior human characteristic," she told Y-Magazine.

Although we carry the same bacteria, she said, ours actually are different from everyone else's. She shows off the distinct patterns, with the bacteria awash in vibrant colors and dynamic patterns.
