Apple Wants to Make TV, Which Is Great News for Cord Cutters

Losing 'Top Gear' was a bruise, but the company won’t stop there.

Original programming seems to be all the rage, and Netflix even banked on its own programming when it cut off from a cable deal as it's distancing itself from its bottom-of-the-barrel library. Now Apple wants to have some of its own shows, sources told Variety.

This news might be a bit of a head-scratcher. Apple has a number of irons in the fire, but when was the last time you heard about the company actually making content?

Deals are still murky at the point, and it's not clear what sorts of shows or movies Apple might want to go for. One high-level source told Variety that the company might want to create an entire division for longer content. And the possibility of having an Apple-funded television series isn't out of the blue: Apple bid and lost Top Gear to Netflix. Another source said the effort was a little more like a "flirtation," but the common thread seems to be that Apple is "interested."

It's clear Apple has the funds for it; the company doesn't spend as nearly as much of its money on moonshot programs like Google/Alphabet does. But is it late to the party? It's probably too early to tell.
