Apple Targets 2019 ‘Ship Date’ for Electric Car Project

Smartphone? Check. Tablet? Check. Electric Car? Hmm.

Apple has set an estimated "ship date" of 2019 for the project, according to a report this afternoon from the Wall Street Journal. The WSJ cautioned, however, that this date may not necessarily mean when consumers can expect to see the car, but when Apple engineers "sign off on a project's main features."

This report comes just a few days after California's Department of Motor Vehicles confirmed that it met with Apple in August to discuss regulations surrounding autonomous vehicles. It also comes a few days after Apple CEO Tim Cook artfully dodged questions from Stephen Colbert about Apple's car plans.

Apple's efforts to develop an electric car are believed to be fall under the umbrella Project Titan. An estimated 600 people are currently working on the project, according to the WSJ, though Apple has authorized this number to increase to 1800. Apple has spent more than a year "investigating the possibility" of creating a car.
