An Island on a Lake on an Island on a Lake on an Island

NASA just published photos of the world's largest sub-sub-sub island.

Among its many strange distinctions, here's one you probably didn't know about Canada: it's home to the world's largest island within a lake on an island in a lake on an island.

On Sunday, NASA published some high-res, natural color photos of the sub-sub-sub island that were captured by its Operational Land Imager on the Landsat 8 satellite this summer.

The tiny unnamed island is located within the Canadian territory of Nunavut in an also unnamed lake, which is located on an island in a bigger unnamed lake, which itself is on Victoria Island: a large, water-speckled mass in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.

According to NASA, the little "seahorse-shaped" island measures 1,000 feet across from west to east, giving it the distinction of being the largest of its kind.

Though rare, it's not the only one in the world, however. On the Filipino island of Luzon, for example, there is a small island called Vulcan Point that itself sits in a lake on an island in a lake on Luzon. It was previously believed to be the largest sub-sub-sub-island in the world.

But Canada is also home to some of the world's other biggest lake-island combos, such as Manitoulin Island, the largest freshwater island in the world, and Nettilling Lake, the world's largest lake on an island.

Maybe instead of the "great white north" we should start calling Canada the "great white islands-on-lakes-on-islands place." Actually don't. Don't do that.
