A First Peek Inside SpaceX's Dragon Capsule for Human Spaceflight

The future of space travel just got a lot slicker. SpaceX has released some interior images for its human flight capsule, the Crew Dragon. It looks pretty much like a cross between a multi-tiered sports car and a space limo, with seats like an adult-sized luxury stroller.

Photographs of the Dragon's innards are spacecraft porn at its best.

A YouTube video reveals multiple displays embedded inside the Crew Dragon's sleek monochrome interior. The displays are designed to provide information in real-time on everything from the spacecraft's position in space, conditions onboard, and where it's headed next.

To avoid cabin fever, an "Environmental Control and Life Support System" (ECLSS) ensures maximum comfort by allowing astronauts to regulate the temperature onboard between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Boosting comfort and the overall flight experience, seats inside the Dragon have been made from the highest-grade carbon fiber and Alcantara cloth—a microfibre, leather-like fabric used in luxury cars. Incidentally, this fabric is also used in some high-end children's buggies. Four windows allow astronauts to gaze out onto the Earth, Moon, and the rest of the Solar System as they jet through the atmosphere.

And, if things did go pear-shaped, an astronaut ejection system onboard the spacecraft (tested earlier this year), allows crew members to make a speedy exit.

In 2012, the Dragon became the first commercial spacecraft to deliver cargo to the International Space Station. But Elon Musk, brainchild behind the hyperloop and Tesla electric car, has always wanted to jet people up there too, and he wants to ensure trips to space are both scenic and comfy.
