Keeping chill amid Winter Storm Juno's leftovers, 12 snow monsters are trying not to melt away in New York City's Flatiron District. Lucky for them, though, they're made of one of nature's longest-lasting materials: marble. Part of Peter Regli's Reality Hacking, an ongoing public intervention series, his climate-appropriate sculptures took to the streets earlier this week to "interrupt the routine of the commuter and provide a humorous diversion within the wintry New York landscape."

The marble that makes up the Snow Monsters sculptures was sourced from a warmer side of the world, Da Nang, Vietnam, where its fabricators, the Hánh family, took a break from crafting traditional statues for Buddhist temples to sculpt these suspended creatures. “I chose the snowman because of its Buddha-like nature," explains Regli in the press release."They appear briefly in the world, bring joy and evoke memories of childhood, then disappear again, melting away without complaint.”

Catch the snowbeings, permanently trapped in different states of melting, in front of the Flatiron Building through March 3, 2015.
