A Palestinian was shot dead after he allegedly tried to stab an Israeli security guard at a border crossing on Saturday, while the head of a Jewish human rights organization was attacked Friday by a masked Jewish man near a settlement in the West Bank.The attacks took place as talks resumed in Amman, Jordan, where US Secretary of State John Kerry and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met in a diplomatic effort to address the surge in violence.An Israeli police spokesperson reported that the suspect in the border crossing incident, who was 16-years-old according to the Palestinian Health Ministry, approached the Jalameh crossing between the northern West Bank and Israel from the Palestinian side when he attacked the Israeli security guard.Meanwhile, footage has emerged of a masked Jewish assailant threatening head of Rabbis For Human Rights Rabbi Arik Ascherman. A Haaretz report stated that the rabbi claimed that the incident occurred when he and a Palestinian returned from a harvest and witnessed Jewish settlers stealing olives and setting trees on fire in the orchard. The video shows the assailant beating and throwing rocks at Ascherman before pulling out his knife.At least 52 Palestinians have been shot dead by Israelis at the scene of attacks or during protests in the West Bank and Gaza since Oct. 1, while nine Israelis have been stabbed or shot dead by Palestinians.The violence has in part been triggered by Palestinian anger over what they say is Jewish encroachment on the al-Aqsa compound, Islam's third holiest site, which is also revered by Jews. Kerry stated on Saturday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed to install 24-hour surveillance cameras on the site in an attempt to show that Israel is "making no change to the status quo and is not targeting mosques," according to Haaretz.Kerry will also meet with King Abdullah of Jordan, who is custodian of the al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem's walled Old City.
