Komon and Appleblim Continue Aus's Winning Streak With A New EP

Check out one of the tracks, "Key Vision," before the record drops next week.

It's been a minute since broken beat dons Appleblim and Komon made a dubstep beat, despite the fact that their roots in the dubstep community run deep. Appleblim (aka Laurie Osborne) ran the seminal bass label Skull Disco with Shackleton and held a residency at the legendary FWD>> club night, while Komon (aka Keiren Lomax, pictured above) made a name for himself under the banner Komonazmuk, his dubstep-oriented moniker. Although they've since branched out to slower tempos and regular kick drum patterns, their origins in bass music are evident on their more recent and housier productions, like "Key Vision," a cut from the duo's forthcoming EP. There's hardly a straight kick drum here—instead, it stutters and disappears, so the 4/4 momentum is mostly pinned down by snares, hi-hats, and a triangle jingle. Furthermore, the percussive elements are decorated with stabs of the deepest sub bass imaginable, plus a vocal that seems to cruise in and out of the mix like a hula hoop swinging in circles around a dancer's hips.

"Key Vision" is one of four tracks included on the Motion Blur EP, which drops August 4 via Will Saul's Aus label. It's the latest in a series of smashes from the Aus camp—this year alone, the imprint has released records from house heavyweights Huxley, Bicep, and Midland, as well as a 12" from Saul himself—and it doesn't disappoint.
