In an era when your blog isn’t just a diary but is, rather, that platform for your personal brand, the idea that something as important as Human Rights doesn’t have a symbol is baffling. But then again, logos are usually a sign of a group or organization—some entity that needs a branded identify. So, I take it back, the fact that Human Right’s doesn’t have a logo totally makes sense. Kind of.

Either way, it’s getting one. A website called humanrightslogo.net is running a world-wide contest do design and choose a symbol that embodies universal human rights. It started a couple of weeks ago, and runs until July 31st. A panel of judges will have the month of August to select 10 finalists, and then the public will get to vote on the logo.

Given that there are already more than 1800 designs, lots of them pretty great, I don’t necessarily envy the jury, which is made up of human rights activists and designers from around the world. A cutesy vector file won’t necessarily end government abuses and fix our human rights problems around the world, but on the other hand, it certainly can’t hurt. Find the Official Guidelines here.
