Israel Says It Has Crippled Hamas' Drone Future

Days after Israeli Defense Forces took out Hamas military leader Ahmed al-Jabari with a drone, kickstarting a whole new era of live-blogged information warfare, the IDF propaganda wheel rolls on. Tel Aviv is claiming how, among other things, its ongoing assault on Gaza has dealt a significant blow to Hamas’ hopes of developing something like a robust program for unmanned aerial vehicles.

One of the pillars of the awfully (appropriately?) named Operation Pillar of Defense has been targeting sites known to be (or at the very least, believed to be) Hamas technological nerve centers. The IAF has recently attacked eight of these compounds, all drone storage facilities, inflicting “severe damage to Hamas’s UAV infrastructure,” according to the IDF. Undated surveillance footage purportedly showing a drone test flight over Khan Yunis, Gaza, was apparently enough to spur the IDF attacks on the militant organization, who said late last week that its drone program was in advanced R&D stages.

It may not look like much, this undated footage. A Hamas drone appears to spiral downward, out of control. That’s it. Yet the IDF insists, much to Hamas’ claims, that this was the work of a group “close” to mastering functional unmanned systems. The IDF claims, further, that these drones would’ve had decent range—more than a half-dozen miles. That would’ve been close enough for them reach Tel Aviv after launching out of the Gaza Strip.

Whether or not Hamas still possesses (or ever possessed) field-ready future-war technology could factor heavily into the the situation along the Israeli-Gaza border as it moves forward to an end. But if the IDF’s boasting is to be believed, and with ceasefire talks maybe imminent, innocent Palestinians have in no way been the only victims of Tel Aviv’s shelling.
