Make It Do Something Better: A Documentary About Hackers
Posted by Ivan_Forde on Thursday, Jul 15, 2010
As melodramatic and corny as it can get (natch), this old Discovery Channel documentary offers good insight into the meaning, methodology and cultural impact of the hackers movement. It focuses on early hacking legends John Draper aka “captain crunch phone phreak” and Steve Wozniak – co-founder of Apple – and the naughty code tinkering they did in the days before the Internet was a word. Ultimately you realize without these dudes taking computer systems apart, making it do different things than they were supposed to, and outsmarting phone companies and making free calls with captain crunch whistles, you wouldn’t have your precious easy-to-use apps.
